Burundi Government Orders ISPs to Block Access to Social and Messaging Apps
The Burundi government has shut down Internet access for most of the country’s citizens by ordering telecoms and ISPs to block practically all social networking apps, including Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, and Viber. The African nation has been gripped by political violence and unrest since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would run for a third term in June elections, which may violate the constitution and the fragile peace accord which ended the 12 year civil war in 2005.
Disruptions to social media and messaging apps began on Monday, according to Internet rights group AccessNow, and have continued or increased since then. The affected apps represent the main method of Internet access from many Burundians.
&Although fixed line internet does not appear to be impacted, the majority of internet users in Burundi rely upon mobile Internet for connectivity,& AccessNow reported in a letter which the group sent to the UN and African Union, urging the restoration of free speech and free association rights which the Internet block has effectively removed.
Following the shutdown of private radio stations, the government ordered service providers to restrict internet access through the ARCT, Burundi’s telecommunications regulator. ARCT told us in writing yesterday to suspend several social networks, notably Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook and Tango, but not all Internet access, a source told Yahoo News.
AccessNow is concerned that the practice of restricting Internet access could spread to other areas experiencing instability. have tracked several instances of politically motivated shut downs in 2015, and we fear that this practice will continue to spread without a high level international response,& the letter says.

The group notes that already this year in Africa the Democratic Republic of Congo ordered a near month long service shutdown, and Niger blocked services for several days.
In Africa’s wealthiest countries, gradual infrastructure development is expected to enable more widespread Internet use and eventually cloud adoption, and investment by service providers in those countries continues.
March 4, 2005 (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) According to reports, the Utah Senate approved legislation last week that would require Internet service providers to block access to publicly accessible Web sites that host pornographic content and are considered to be harmful to minors. The legislation would reportedly create a public list of Web sites to which ISPs would be forced to deny access. You can also lose flexibility, simply because tendons and ligaments degrade over time. They dehydrate, and adhesions, or internal scar tissue, can form with minor injuries. Muscle tissue also goes through degradation over time, known as sarcopenia. After age 50, we lose muscle mass at a rate of 1 to 2 percent per year [source: Western Washington University]. Muscle is also replaced by fat.
Stamina and energy are often the next to go. This is partly related to the sarcopenia, but can also be caused by cardiomyopathy (a weakened heart) or diminished lung capacity. Loss of height is one cause of that diminishment in lung capacity there is literally less room for the lungs to expand. Losing height is a natural part of aging, but if it happens rapidly, it can be serious osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass, is a potential cause.
Finally, our immune systems are weaker as we get older because we produce fewer lymphocytes, the cells that fight infection. This can be due to nutritional deficiencies, but it’s also just a part of aging.

Canadian Web Hosting Offers New SSD Cloud Servers
Canadian Web Hosting announced on Tuesday its expansion of SSD (Solid State Drive) cloud servers. SSD has been considered too pricey for use in servers in the past. As technology has evolved the viability of using SSD in racks is much higher.
The service is available in Vancouver, BC and Toronto, ON from a 100 percent Canadian owned and operated company. The new servers include new pricing, higher performance and more fixed resources. Even greater speed is available with super fast SSDs from Intel. The servers support Windows and Linux and offer high performance hosting for applications, sites, databases and indexing. Integrated tools include DNS Manager, backup snapshots, 1 click installs.
The servers meet all Canadian privacy and regulatory requirements for data and are SSAE 16 compliant. Customers receive free access to planning and migration services.
SSD is generally still more expensive that HDD. However, there are some benefits to using SSD, mainly speed. The disk uses emerging PCM (phase change memory) technology that makes data bits available much more quickly than NAND flash can. NAND takes about 70 microseconds to respond to a data request where PCM can do the same in 1 microsecond.
