When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破)one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us .People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. she never barked(吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loves everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service ,pretended not to understand her ,or even acted as if they did not hear her .
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me cheek already two week lone.”
And then , in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather concerned .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”
Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate(容忍) any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately , I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

A. is clear and natural to non-native speakers
B. is vivid and direct to non-native speakers
C. has a very bad reputation in America
D. may bring inconvenience in America
How I Turned to Be Optimistic
I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving, I thought about all the places I was going to see-—the strange and magical places. I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

There were smiling children all the way. Charily they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight, immediately I I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3: 00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle waved with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug (拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

第二节、阅读表达(5小题;每小题2分,满分10分.)
阅读下面短文,用英语简要回答文后所给的5个问题(回答时,每题不超过15个单词)
I remember a time I went shopping on my first visit to Macau. Coming from cold and cloudy England, I was prepared for the sun and dresssed in a T-shirt and a short skirt. Not having much chance to enjoy the sun in the UK and having naturally fair skin, my legs are very white. In the UK this is not a fashionable(时尚的) look at all. Most women spend every sunny day out in the sun trying to get darker skin. The darker the skin, the better the look.
As I walked around one shop, the two shop assistants didn’t take their eyes off me the whole time, talking quietly in Chinese .I began to feel uncomfortable and asked my friend if we could leave. After we left the shop, she asked me what was wrong. I was embarrassed that they were talking about my white skin. My friend laughed. “They were not laughing at you .They were saying how nice your legs are. Many Chinese women want to have white skin like yours. In fact, there are many beauty products in the shops to make skin whiter and a lot of money is spent on them.”
It just goes to show that we always think what others have is better. The grass is always greener on the other side. If the women of the West and East thought the same way, Western women wouldn’t spend so much money on cream that makes skin darker and women from the East wouldn’t need to use cream that makes skin whiter .
1. What is the writer telling about?
______________________________________________________________________
2. What did the writer prepare to do during her visit?
______________________________________________________________________
3. Why did the writer want to leave the shop at once?
______________________________________________________________________
4. Why did the writer think the shop girls were laughing at her?
______________________________________________________________________
5. What does the underlined sentence “The grass is always greener on the other side” mean?

M: Hi, Mary! How was your holiday?
W: Not so good. I had thought it would be sunny, but actually we had a whole week of rain.
W: The bus is supposed to arrive at seven o’clock.
M: Seven o’clock? But it is already seven twenty.
W: I’d like to book a ticket to New York this morning.
M: I’m sorry. The flight is full now. You can get a discount of 10 percent if you take the night flight. You can save 40 dollars.
W: If I were you, I’d take the bus to work. Driving in that rush hour is terrible.
M: But by the time the bus gets to my stop, there aren’t any seats left.
W: Mrs Smith has already finighed her term of teaching in China, She is flying back to London tomorrow.
M: So let’s go and see her off tomorrow. Is that OK?
W: All right. She is such a good teacher. I wish she could teach us longer.
W: What are you going to do when you graduate?
M: I’d like to get a job in America. And at the same time I can improve my English. What are you going to do after you leave college?
W: First, I”ll travel to all the places of interest in China. Then I’ll go back to Canada to be a teacher. I want to tell the children in Canada that China is a very great and beautiful country.
M: I hope your dream can come true, But I’m afraid I can’t talk to you anymore. I have to prepare for my exam.
M: I just can’t believe it! How much did we pay the newspaper to advertise this job?
W: $90, Mr. Conn.
M: Ninety dollars? It wasn’t worth ninety cents. Every single person who’s come here today has been an absolutely hopeless loser.
W: Well, uh…
M: Are there any applicants left now , or is that the last?
W: There’s just one gentleman waiting, Mr.conn.
M: Ah well, he can’t be any worse than the rest of them. What’s his name?
W: John Berry.
M: OK, show Mr. Berry in then, Judith.
W: OK, Mr. Conn. Mr. Berry, Mr.Conn will see you now.
W: United Airlines. Can I help you?
M: Yes, please, I have a reservation for Flight Number210 to Paris at 10:00pm. I'm afraid it’ll be fifficult for me to make it at that time.Is there a later flight tonight?
W: Just one moment, please. I will check.
W: Yes, we’ve got your reservation here. There’s another flight at ten to twelve.
M: That will be fine. Can you change the reservation, please?
W: All right. Cancel the ticket for Flight Number 210, and book one seat on Flight Number 335 to Paris.
M: Flight Number 335 to Paris at 11:50 pm. That’s perfect. I will pick up my ticket at the airport.
W: Very good, sir. It must be collected no later than 11:15pm.
M: All right. Thanks.
W: You’re welcome.
W: Hi, Bob. What a fine day today! Would you like to go skating this afternoon?
M: I wish I could, but I have to spend the rest of the day in the library. I have to write a 900-word composition.
W: Oh, is that for Mr Smith’s class?
M: Yes, and it must be handed in on Monday morning.
W: My English teacher also set some homework. He asked us to recite a very long poem.
M: How lucky! Besides the composition, I also have to finish all my maths exercises and they must be handed in on Tuesday.
W: Don’t worry, You know, Bob, I’ve been doing well in maths, so I’ll be happy to help you.
Oh, that will be great, Jane.
If you like, we can start right after I come back from skating.
M: OK. I’ll see you in front of the library.
(Text10)
Every morning, dids from a local high school work hard at making and selling special coffee at a cafe in the Oakland Airport. They are also making a lot of money.
These students can make up to 12 hundred dollars a day selling their special coffee to airplane passengers. After the students get paid, the rest of the money goes to helping a local youth project.
The customers think that though the coffee coses a lot, it is good and worth it.
The students earn $6.10 an hour. They also get school credits while they learn how to run a business. Many of the students enjoy the work although it takes some time to learn how to do it.
They have to learn how to steam milk, load the pots and add flavour. It takes some skills and sometimes mistakes are made. The most common mistake is forgetting to add the coffee.
