要做到“三看”(如图)：
(1)看刻度尺的零刻线是否磨损。如已磨损应从其他清晰划线量起
(2)看刻度尺的量程(测量范围)。原则上测长度要求一次测量，如果测量范围小于实际长度，势必要移动刻度尺测量若干次，这样会产生较大的误差。
(3)看刻度尺的分度值。分度值反映了刻度尺的准确程度和测量结果的有效性。量程和分度值应从实际测量的要求出发进行选择。2、长度的测量工具
刻度尺使用方法：
（1）会“选”，指刻度尺的选择，不同的刻度尺其精确程度不同，也就是分度值不同。测量对象不同，所需的精确程度也不同。例如：在安装门窗玻璃时进行的测量准确程度要求较高，要选用分度值为1mm的刻度尺，而测量教室的长和宽时，准确程度要求不高，长度较大，选用分度值是lcm且量程较大的卷尺较合适。(2)会“放”。如图所示．尺要沿着所测的物体，不利用磨损的零刻线。所谓沿着，一是指放正不歪斜；二是指要尽可能地贴近被测长度。零刻线磨损的应以其他某一刻线为零点，读数时要注意减去“零点”前的数字：(3)会“看”。如图所示，读数时，视线要与尺面垂直，不要斜视。(4)会“读”。精确的测量需要估渎，指在读数时，除准确读出分度值的数字(准确值)外，还要估读到分度值的下一位(估计值)。如25．38cm中， 25．3cm是准确值，0．08cm是估计值，虽然估读的并不准确，但它对我们还是有用的，它表示该物体的长度在 25．3～25．4cm之间而更接近于25．4cm。(5)会 “记”。记录测量结果时，除了正确无误地记下所读出的数字外，还要标明单位，只写了数字未标明单位的记录是没有意义的3、选用合适刻度尺和正确记录数据的方法：
长度测量的精确程度是由刻度尺的分度值决定的。所以，根据所要达到的精确度，要选择分度值和量程都合适的直尺、皮卷尺等刻度尺，如：测量课本的长度，用分度值为1mm、量程为30cm的塑料直尺即可。用精确度很高的刻度尺去测量一个精确度要求不是很高的物体，如用游标卡尺或去测量课桌的长度，增加了测量的麻烦，也是不可取的。测量时要尽量选择量程大于所测物体长度的刻度尺，这样可避免多次测量的累加，提高测量精确度。
正确读数和记录数据是做好测量的关键。读数时，应弄清各大小刻度值的意义(即标有数字的主刻度的单位及分度值的单位)。如图所示，每一大格为1cm，每一小格为1mm。读数时，还要注意被测物体的始端是否与刻度尺的零刻线对齐，若没有对齐，要将所读数值减去这一刻度的刻度值。
计使用：(1)使用前应观察它的量程和最小刻度值；(2)使用时温度计玻璃泡要全部浸入被测液体中，不要碰到容器底或容器壁；(3)待温度计示数稳定后再读数；(4)读数时玻璃泡要继续留在被测液体中，视线与温度计中液柱的上表面相平。
时间测量:通常所说的时间测量包括：时间间隔的测量和时刻的测量。工具主要有停表、手表、钟表以及占代用的日晷、沙漏等，如图所示。 此外，在一些要求不太严格的时间测量中，我们也可以用自己的脉搏(或心率)来测量时间，知道自己心脏每分钟的跳动次数，再数出做某件事时自己脉搏跳动的总次数，就可以求…做这件事所用的时间了(注意：必须是在脉搏跳动或心率稳定的情况下)。
