Enabling everything HAM radio on Centos Linux! This document is my journey into Linux-assisted HAM
radio with Centos. This covers many different topics along my personal discovery which started with
AX.25 packet radio, then into HF digital modes, and most recently SDR and D*star technologies!
doc will be constantly evolving (mostly focused on Centos6 today, used to be focused on Centos5)
but here is the index to give you an idea of what it covers today:
system setup script.

section for more detail
APRS's Email2 system (a bit more complicated) - see the next section for more details
You can also send APRS messages back and forth via the Internet (Internet to RF-based APRS)
Finally, there are lots other things you can too (just a few examples):
Sending CQ requests for a global APRS messaging QSOs - http://www.aprs.org/cqsrvr.html
Interrogate remote APRS stations for their various details (see the QUERIES
section at the bottom of this URL) -
The key thing to remember about APRS is that it's flexible and extensible.
where it started to where it is now is impressive.
With the addition of the APRS-IS
system, it now allows APRS radios to essentially do anything (with limitations of
Email, small web pages, etc. were just the start and the community is just
waiting for someone to contribute the next cool idea.
for full details.
Here is a little detail on the different generations of Qsstv:
Qsstv v9.x has changed the UI a bit where it has now separated the analog vs.
digital modes a bit.
It has also improved the DRM support, added some modern
analog modes, and in 9.1.1, it's moved from the aging Jasper JPEG library to
the newer OpenJPEG libraries.
Qsstv (v8.x) added HamDRM digital SSTV support which is compatible with the
Windows EasyPal and Linux RXTXAMADRM digital SSTV programs.
This new version
includes BSR fix support, Hybrid mode, and more.
This new code requires the
Qt 4.8.x framework which that installation is covered in the Gqrx section of
this document.
IMPORTANT:
----------
These new Qt4.8 libraries are NOT compatible with Centos5.
As such, if
you're running Centos5, you're at a dead end.
Time to upgrade to a newer
version Centos.
QSSTV (v7.1.x) supported Analog SSTV modes only but all of it's dependencies are
natively available in Centos6. Centos5 users can upgrade the core Qt libraries
with third party libs to make it work.
With that said,
it starts getting
pretty sketchy and you can break your OS if you're not careful.
It's great news
that it's technically possible but doing this is NOT for the faint of heart
(Centos 5)!

for more details.
61MSPS bandwidth at 12bits
- 100 kHz - 3.8 GHz
- 61.44 MHz maximum bandwidth at 12bit
- 6 RX antenna jacks, 4 TX antenna jacks (2x2 MIMO)
- full duplex @ 0 to 10dBm power
- Altera Cyclone IV EP4CE40F23 FPGA
- Scroll down on the above LimeSDR page to see a comparison table against
the HackRF, Ettus B200, B210, BladeRF x40, and an RTL dongle
- Very comparable to the Ettus B210 but over 50% cheaper
This is the HackRF device supporting a full 20Mhz / 20MSPS bandwidth at 8bits
- 20Mhz wide passband
(requires an extremely fast computer and very fast USB performance)
- 10Mhz to 6Ghz support
- NO RX pass band filters to protect the frontend (this is important)
- 8bit sampling
(sampling rates really matter depending if you just want a panadapter vs. a proper receiver)
- I/Q Sampling receiver so it has the center DC spike
- Receive and 10mw Transmit section
dedicated TX connector)
Seems like TX support isn't supported by few amplification stages exist
- Encased in plastic enclosure - unclear if this not enough to shield out hearing near-field birdies, etc
- OpenSource drivers easily compiled and supported by GnuRadio
- No real preferred SDR program but is supported many others (including Gqrx)
- HackRF Blue - A lower cost version of the original HackRF but currently no
longer in stock
This is the BladeRF x40 40MSPS bandwidth at 12bits
- $420 (x40 model) or $650 (x115 model)
- Very wide performance (can display 124Mhz wide waterfall in Gqrx)
- 300MHz - 3.8GHz support
- Independent 12-bit 40MSPS RX and TX using LimeMicro LMS6002D transceiver
- Receive and 10mw Transmit section
full duplex up to 28Mhz BW;
- 2x2 MIMO Wifi configurable with SMB cable, expandable up to 4x4
Seems like TX support isn't supported by few amplification stages exist
- All sources are open source and easily compiled
- On-board Altera Cyclone 40KLE or 115KLE (upgraded model) FPGA
- On-board Cypress FX3 200MHz ARM9 with 512KB embedded SRAM for USB3 control
- USB3.0 (5Gbps) based interface with USB2.0 compatibility
- Optional XB200 transverter board for passband filtering at HF, 50MHz, 144MHz, and 222MHz
- Optional XB300 Diversity RX + LNA + 33dBm (2.0watt) amplifier + TRX switch @ 2.4ghz
- NO TX filtering is offered in this board - BEWARE
- Various add on boards, cases, antennas, etc available
This is the Ettus Research B200 bandwidth at 12bits
- Ettus B200 / B210 - $675 single transceiver SDR unit
- 70 MHz to 6 GHz
- 56 MHz bandwidth
- Has 10mw half-duplex transmit support on a dedicated transmit connector
- Onboard Xilinx Spartan-6 XC6SLX75 FPGA
- Many different add-on boards are available
- All sources are open source and easily compiled
- USB3 based
- Considered one of the best SDRs ou early contributor to GnuRadio
There are so many other SDR boards out there now that it's becoming a bit crazy:
- 's R820T2 + RTL2832U with TXCO and BiasT support - $25
- Outernet E4000 based SDR with TCXO : $39 - https://outernet.is/
- FlightAware Pro Stick w/ 20db LNA specialized for 1090Mhz using R820T2 and RTL2832U chips : $17
[ Many others in this field too - email me if you have a favorite not listed here ]
Medium End:
- FreeSRP : $350 - http://electronics.kitchen/freesrp
- Red Pitaya : 199 Euro - /
[ Many others in this field too - email me if you have a favorite not listed here ]
Each of these units have their pros and cons.
Depending on your requirements, the edge currently
goes with the SDR-Play unit for price vs. performance.
Unfortunately, the closed source drivers
in the SDR-Play unit block it's use with Centos6.
As such, I'm moving forward with the AirSpy R2.
that might be helpful to you.
Give it a read.
NOT REQUIRED:
For completeness (but shouldn't be required except for the most strict
firewalls), Svxlink makes OUTGOING 5200/tcp connections to the Echolink
Svxlink can also need INCOMING 5210/tcp if you're linking
multiple Svxlink systems using it's "remotetrx" feature.
If you're only
using the Echolink support within Svxlink, this port 5210 is not needed.
Svxlink vs. Windows Echolink:
It might be worth mentioning that Echolink 2.x for Windows and newer versions
no longer require specific port forwarding but if you try to work remote
Echolink stations that ARE running Echolink 1.x, you will STILL NEED to
enable the port forwards.
