Green Day front man and Grammy& Award-winning artist Billie Joe Armstrong and Grammy& Award-winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones have teamed up to record Foreverly, an unforgettable 12-song collection inspired by Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, an album of traditional Americana songs reinterpreted, recorded, and released by The Everly Brothers in 1958. Recorded in nine days, Foreverly, captures the beauty of the Everly's stunning close harmonies to create a moving powerful testament to these rootsy ballads. Jones and Armstrong reinterpret several traditional songs, including "Roving Gambler," "Down In The Willow Garden," "Long Time Gone," "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet?," and "Barbara Allen," as well as country tunes like "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" (written by Gene Autry and Jimmy Long) and Karl Davis' "Kentucky."
"I've been a big fan of The Everly Brothers since I was a little boy," Armstrong says. "A couple of years ago, I discovered Songs Our Daddy Taught Us for the first time, and I fell in love with it. I was playing it every day and thought it would be a cool idea to re-do the record, but with a female singer. I thought of Norah because she can sing anything, from rock to jazz to blues, and I knew her harmonies would be amazing. I thought the songs would take on a different meaning working with her, and she has a really good ear for arrangements. I was mainly intrigued by these old traditionals, country songs, and hymns. When we were done with the album, Norah looked at me and said, 'I bet you didn't think you were going to make a country record, huh?'"
Jones, a long-time Everly Brothers fan herself, who used to cover "Bird Dog" in a previous band, describes herself as "a sucker for harmonies and country music."
Also, she says, "Billie Joe's enthusiasm about the songs and his low-key, open approach to the music was very inviting. He wasn't set in his ideas, which made it fun for us both to sort of discover what felt right for us, musically."
Armstrong and his engineer, Chris Dugan, traveled to New York to record with Jones at The Magic Shop in Manhattan with two of Jones' favorite musicians, bassist Tim Luntzel and drummer Dan Rieser. Armstrong and Jones played guitar and piano. Charlie Burnham on fiddle and Johnny Lam on pedal steel guitar rounded out the band. "It was super fun and experimental," Jones says. "I loved that the original was completely stripped down and a little more obscure.
There was a lot of room to interpret the songs in our own way."

American Idiot' The Musical began its 11 day run in Japan at Tokyo International Forum today. More info and tickets:
Green Day are set to release their documentary film, '¡Cuatro!', on August 26.
The film will come out as a CD/DVD, alongside the band's 'Tre!' album - the final part of the punk band's recent '¡Uno!', '¡Dos!' and '¡Tre!' trilogy - which was first released at the start of the year.
The film received its world premiere at the Winter X Games back in January, and also screened at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March. The behind-the-scenes documentary, directed by Tim Lynch, looks at the process of making '¡Uno!', '¡Dos!' and '¡Tre!', as well as showing footage from the band's 2012 Stateside shows.
Of the film Mike Dirnt, the band's bassist, previously said: "¡Cuatro! brings our fans one step closer by giving them even more access and revealing what it was like for us to make these records."
Green Day played London's Emirates Stadium - the huge 60,000 capacity venue commonly used by Arsenal Football Club - earlier this summer, setting a new gig attendance record for the venue. The band took to the stage at the north London enormodome on June 1 to play a hit-packed set which also featured audience antics, bizarre costumes and Billie Joe Armstrong firing a huge toilet paper gun into the crowd.
The venue sold out all 60,000 tickets for the first time. Other acts including Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen have played sell-out shows at the Emirates Stadium in the past but their attendance figures were lower due to different staging and seating configurations.
Green Day return to the UK later this month to headline Reading and Leeds festivals on August 23 and 24. They performed at Reading last year, delighting fans by playing a secret set on the NME/Radio 1 stage on Saturday morning.

Thing Named After Green Day: Macrocarpaea dies-viridis - a species of night-blooming flowers within the Macrocarpaea genus named after Billie Joe and co.
From what our research has told us, the flower named after Green Day looks more like a dried-up weed. However, when its in a nocturnal bloom, the particular type of Macrocarpaea named after the punk-rock trio probably looks similar to the picture above (which is actually one of its sister species).
According to Rolling Stone, "Harvard researchers bestowed the name "dies-viridis" (Latin for "green day") upon their newly minted species of night-blooming flower after listening to the band while driving throughout Ecuador on their research trips."
We wonder which Green Day tracks made it onto their road trip playlist... we'd put money on 'Welcome to Paradise.'

Green Day today announced they would cancel their scheduled performance at this year's Voodoo Music + Arts Experience on October 27, 2012.
"Canceling shows is something we rarely do," said Tre Cool.
"We never want to let our fans down, and we are grateful for all of you being understanding during this time."

GREEN DAY ANNOUNCE THAT BEST COAST WILL JOIN THE BAND AS SUPPORT FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY ARENA DATES DURING UPCOMING ¡UNO!, ¡DOS!, ¡TRE! TOUR
Reprise Records' Green Day have announced that they will be joined by Best Coast as support for their upcoming arena dates next January and February as part of their ¡UNO!, ¡DOS!, ¡TRE! TOUR. Best Coast will join Green Day beginning on January 8th in Rosemont, IL at the Allstate Arena and open all dates following, wrapping up on February 8th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. All dates are on-sale now and can be found below.
Best Coast, the proudly Southern Californian duo of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, have matured in both their sound and perspective with the highly acclaimed sophomore record, The Only Place which was released May 15th, 2012 on Mexican Summer. This follow-up to 2010's Crazy For You was launched in tandem with Cosentino's capsule collection for Urban Outfitters and landed them the cover of Spin Magazine.
